Had another telephone coaching session this afternoon with my wonderful coach, Judith Morgan.
People sometimes express surprise when I tell them I have a coach (actually, I have more than one!). They say things like "But you're such a high achiever, why do you need a coach?" I always reply "Isn't it obvious?" Think about it, which comes first? Would I be such a high achiever if I wasn't being coached? I don't think so.
When I have a coaching session I get refocused on where I'm going, what I have to do, why I'm doing it and how I'm going to do it. Two heads are better than one, they say, and it's true. Judith asks me the questions that I don't sit down and ask myself and gently nudges me in the right direction as she hears my responses much more clearly than I do.
You know, if you've never tried being coached, give it a go, you may be surprised. Be warned, though, different coaches have different styles so you need to find one who's as directive (or not) as you need. I know many coaches will have an initial chat without charge, so you've nothing to lose, and a lot to gain.
As a result of just that 1 hour session today, I've had a really productive evening clearing up my (really, really messy) office as well as two overflowing bookcases in the hallway, all of which were really getting me down. It might not be everybody's idea of a rivetting Friday night, but I just love the sense of achievement it's given me. Not only that, but I now have a much better working environment in which to tackle those other tasks over the coming weeks.
Ooooh, and I've just remembered something else I wanted to tell you about that relates very closely to all this. But I'll keep you on tenterhooks until tomorrow - something for you to look forward to!
excellent comments on coaching. I am surprised more people don't use them (and I am not a coach but a user of coaches and fellow high achiever)
